This presentation was very interesting and eye opening. Prior to this presentation I did not think about what gender is represented by the main character, much less which one is predominantly represented in books. I thought the research to count the gender representation in books was both interesting and crucial. Throughout different research there were different factors that were taken into account to determine what gender category the characters of the book were classified into. After this presentation I will definitely look at the gender representation in the books I read as well as the books I read to my future students.

I found this presentation to be very informative. Dr. Willson discussed the issue at hand in a clear and concise matter that I hadn’t thought about previously. Although I do not personally have any children, I believe this is an important topic that should be discussed. However, finding a solution to market picture books towards boys is equally important. There seems to be a fine line that publishers and illustrators must identify and toe accordingly. To further research this research, I would like to examine what events correlate with the dramatic shift in number of male, female, or gender-neutral characters.

This presentation was very informative. What the presentation showed was that there are a lot more male character count than female or gender-neutral character count in the books that were researched. I found it interesting that in the years 2006-2010 there were more female count than male count. In order to teach the students that they can be anything they want to be, pick book that do not portray either gender in a stereotypical manner. Hold conversations regarding gender issues with books. It will be an interesting topic to teach and it was interesting to learn about as well.

The presentation given by Dr. Wilson was an insight to how differently gender is seen through children’s literature. I didn’t know how dominant male gender was represented in Caldecott winning picture books rather than females. However, what surprised me the most was how writers are now breaking the norm of gender roles and I love that idea/books. I think that is a great way for young children to see that they don’t have to fit the norm but express themselves and what they love to do; having an equal amount of books with both genders is great for children. The research sparked an interest for me to become aware of what books I have for my students; to not pertain to one gender but have both genders who break the norms and help students not only express but build their confidence.

This presentation given by Dr. Angeli Willson on gender-representation in Caldecott winning picture books was very interesting and insightful. Dr. Willson explains what a picture book can give to the audience. She also discussed how after researching she found that there was a higher male representation in these books. Also took a look at the the gender roles portrayed in these book. I found it very interesting that there was a higher rate of female passive roles verses active roles. I was not aware of this. She also showed the increase in the gender-netrual characters which was nice to see. This presentation was very informative and also information on how we can make a difference to help develop gender-equitable views in these children’s picture book.
