I really like this topic. Far too often, we have children who feel discouraged from performing well in school because they are labelled “at-risk.” I was once an “at-risk” student because of my math grades, and I even had a teacher call me out in front of the class for not doing my work when it was simply because I just could not comprehend the problems in front of me (I also did not have the courage to ask for help).
I like California’s effort to re-label at-risk students as “at-promise” students. However, I feel we need to be careful with labels in the first place. Creating a label tends to “segregate” students from each other, though I definitely agree that using a positive label is better than using a negative label.
