History of St. Mary's Law

Our Beginnings

The Marianists founded St. Mary’s Institute in 1852 in downtown San Antonio. The Institute became a University in 1927.

The independent San Antonio School of Law was founded in 1927. Classes were held at the courthouse during the evening.

In 1934, the two institutions joined to form the St. Mary’s School of Law. Classes transfer over to the St. Mary’s University Downtown Campus.

The Early Years

The newly formed School of Law held classes at the original 112 College Street downtown campus. The first class was comprised of 31 students.

The School of Law was first accredited by the American Bar Association in 1948.

The law community as well as many St. Mary’s alum offered their financial support to the school in order to assist in its successful operation.

Growth and Expansion

The current St. Mary’s University campus was established in 1894.

As the School of Law continued to grow, a major turning point also occurred in it’s history. In 1967, the current School of Law Campus on the main St. Mary’s University campus was dedicated. This campus consisted of the Law Classroom Building, Library, and Law Administration Building.

While the original downtown campus no longer functions as an educational institution, it remains standing today as the Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel on the Riverwalk.

Services Expand

The Sarita Kenedy East Law Library, which is the largest legal information center in San Antonio and a Federal depository library, was built in 1984 to serve the law school and community. The former library became a faculty office and academic building, now known as the Ernest A. Raba building.

With service as a major component of it’s mission, the School of Law expanded clinical and service-oriented programs with the opening of the Center for Legal and Social Justice in 1996.
