December Traditions

With the holiday season upon us, San Antonio has many unique traditions to celebrate! From special decorative displays to seasonal food, San Antonio knows how to celebrate.

Some of these popular traditions include:

Riverwalk Lights

Take a stroll or a barge ride on the Downtown segment of the Riverwalk and enjoy the lights draped from the tall bald cypress trees that line the banks. In addition, luminarias line the river to commemorate the lighting of the way for the Holy Family. During your walk, you may even enjoy a mariachi or choir singing your favorite carols.

Light Displays

Many buildings decorate their facades or window displays with festive decor. Be sure to catch the Whataburger display, which is always a sight to see. Many of the downtown parks or squares such as Main, Milam, and Travis will also have Christmas lights as well.

Christmas Foods

In San Antonio, food and the holidays go hand-in-hand. Tamales, champurrado (Mexican hot chocolate), and buñuelos are staples in many households during this time of year. Enjoy these and many more seasonal foods at restaurants and vendors at Market Square and on the Riverwalk.
