Special Session: Latino St. Mary’s: Education, Ethnicity, and Identity at a Catholic-Marianist University

Latinos’ historical engagement with higher education at St. Mary’s University exposed them to existential questions associated with culture, language, and ways of being. This presentation explores the ways in which Latinos’ at St. Mary’s historically negotiated the fine lines between pressures to assimilate and exploring self-defined approaches to integration.

The StMU Research Scholars Project is a collaboration project of faculty and students at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. The project gives students at St. Mary’s University a real-world experience working to research, write, and publish scholarship in academic disciplines across the university. StMU Research Scholars will host a faculty and student panel discussion to share the impact this program has on faculty and students.

The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. In Fall 2022, the U.S. Department of Education awarded St. Mary’s University a more than $1.3 million grant over five years with Dr. Jennifer Zwahr-Castro as the Project Director. During this session, McNair scholars will present their research and the program’s impact on their collegiate experience.
